Focus On Minerals - Book Review

Author Jerry Wermund held a long career in geology and upon retirement he started writing a series of book for children and young adult Earth Science studies. The author?s love for nature and academic experience shows in his latest book, Focus On Minerals. Illustrated by Tony Sansevero, a graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. His studio, ?Magical Ideas?, has created various images, illustrations and art projects for publications and individuals for a number of years. A Member of the Society of Children?s Book Writers and illustrators, Tony?s award winning art has appeared in at least 15 other books and novels. I have to say that the illustrations were impressive and held me captivated for several moments at a time. Smiling children and adults having a good time with various activities, adventures and discoveries. I even laughed out loud when I saw the expressions on the young girls faces on page 39. The author explains the origin of the mineral name, textures, shapes, colors and origins of each mineral. Jerry successfully reveals how human life has been altered with each new mineral discovery. More than thirty minerals are defined in this young scholar?s book; photos of which are also located at the end of the book in the glossary section along with a description of each mineral. Terms and scientific information is also included for classes or home schooled youth to use in their studies. Sadly, Mr. Wermund appeared to make attempts at the use poetic or perhaps lyric style writing for 90% of the text? and failed. In fact, I found it a little hard to understand and had to think about what he was getting at on at least one page. Regardless, the book has a lot to offer ? including the ability to hold the attention of young people for a few moments per page. ISBN: 0972625526 Publisher: Rock On Publishing ~ Lillian Brummet: co-author of the books Trash Talk and Purple Snowflake Marketing, author of Towards Understanding http://www.sunshinecable.com/~drumit

Clearing Your Minerals and Gemstones

It is important to purge negative energies and recharge positive ones in your stone and mineral allies if you use these tools in your visualization and inner work. Clearing your stones periodically dispels negativity that has built up either in a stone's history or through past work it has done for you. It also recharges your tool, the way you recharge a depleted battery ... and refreshes its power the way you do your body with a good night's rest. (In a way it's only courtesy to clear and restore a mineral ally ... the way you would any tool you've used, and it's certainly how you would expect to treat a friend!) A clearing ritual resets and refreshes the stone's energy so that it may connect again with its powers and purpose, and the ritual itself refocuses your intent to make use of the stone and its assets, reaffirms your connection to it, and synchronizes the vibration of your respect and purpose with that of the stone you are using. Probably the most important part of this ritual is simply your intention. You have several options -- methods and suggestions considered traditional in gemstone work, but since your mind, spirit, and aims are the most essential part of your own spiritual life and work, it is important that you do what feels comfortable and right. There are no hard and fast requirements. If one method of clearing stones works for you, use it. If you like a combination of several things, feel free to incorporate them all. Change around the exercises if something feels good or proper to you at one time and something else another. Trust your instincts, above all. And if you feel moved to make up your own rituals, that's perfectly fine, too. * Use the smoke from a sage smudge-stick to clear and clean the energies of your stones. Sage smudges can be found in many metaphysical shops and health food stores and are a standard tool for clearing out unwanted energies from items, spaces, rooms, houses, etc. * Brush the stone in a counter-clockwise circle with your hands or roll the stone counter-clockwise in your hands while you declare that all negative energies are being removed from the stone and that its positive energies are being strengthened and realigned once more. Blow gently on the stone after completing this exercise to make sure the harmful or negative energies are indeed scattered and removed from the aura of the stone itself. * Water, of course, is an excellent cleanser. If possible, use rain water, melted snow, or water from a natural lake or free-flowing stream. Ocean water is marvelous, too, and some people, even when using fresh water like to put sea salt in the water as they wash and cleanse their stones. Yes, you can use tap water, but let it sit for a few days to discharge some of its impurities and additives. * Some people like to use water that has been set out under either the New Moon or the Full Moon to gain a particular charge. Water charged under the New Moon is especially potent for initiating projects or energies associated with the sign that the New Moon is in. Water charged under the Full Moon is good for working with relationships, choices, or bringing things to manifestation. Again, the energies of the Full Moon polarity need to be considered in making the decision to use this particular ritual. * You can warm a stone gently over the heat of a candle flame (NOT in the flame itself, but just enough to warm the stone itself.) or place it to warm by the fire on a hearth. * You might bury the stone in the earth again for a while, as a way of grounding its energies or returning it "home" again to the environment where it has existed for thousands of years before it came to be your helper and where it will probably return again someday when you are gone. A stone that has been used in serious or traumatic healing work may need special care to recharge its energies, just as you would allow a living organism to recuperate and rest after strenuous or difficult labor. For extreme cases, you might consider freezing the stone ... or putting it out in snow ... in order to slow its molecular action, just as you would allow a sick or exhausted person or animal to sleep in order to heal. When you feel it has regained its willingness to serve you, recharge it again gently with some of the above suggestions. It may take several efforts before you feel your stone has reached a state of full power and utility again. Let your intuition be your guide in making this decision. (c) 2007 by Rebecca Brents. Naked Minerals

Are you one of the millions of women ready to trade in your traditional makeup full of chemicals and artificial dyes for the increasingly popular pureness of mineral makeup? Have you hesitated because of the messiness that comes with most mineral makeup powders? Your worries are over! Naked Minerals is a new, cutting edge line of mineral makeup that has redefined the meaning of mineral makeup. This innovative line of pure and natural face makeup combines the silky, youthful effect mineral makeups are loved for with the colors and usability women expect from their makeup to give you a quality makeup product that you can apply anywhere. Using Naked Minerals means beautiful, radiant skin without ever worrying about clogging or irritating your skin. Unlike many mineral makeups on the market today, Naked Minerals really is 100% natural. These pure cosmetics are free of perfumes, dyes, talc, and skin damaging chemicals. Every single product carried in the Naked Minerals line contains nothing more than a blend of genuine minerals that protect and refine your skin. Each product is hypoallergenic, making Naked Minerals perfect for those with extra sensitive skin, and offers natural protection from ultraviolet rays with at least an SPF of 15. Naked Minerals offer a wide range of shades so you can find the perfect mineral makeup for your skin tone, even as it changes through the seasons. The almond and caramel shades are best for most women and are designed for medium and olive skin tones with neutral or gold undertones. Naked Minerals also offers products for very fair skin typical of sunburns with their vanilla line, and even accommodates dark, espresso skin tones through the deep chocolate line. Each skin tone category contains a variety of shades in warm and cool hues so you are sure to find the perfect color to enhance your natural beauty! If you have tried mineral makeup before, only to give it up because the application process was so difficult and messy, Naked Minerals has made it easier! Instead of a fine powder that blows all over the bathroom counter, each product is neatly pressed into a stylish compact for easy use. The relaxing and healthful setting mist, an essential oil commonly used in aromatherapy, is mess-free as well. Simply spray the small bottle across your face to set the makeup or to quickly refresh your makeup throughout the day. Naked Minerals is designed for all day use, lasting up to 24 hours. It?s so natural you can exercise or even sleep without having to reapply your makeup, and it won?t stain sheets or clothing! Naked Minerals also offer very competitive prices for such revolutionary mineral makeup products. For less than $200, the Supreme Collection includes everything you need for a sheer and natural, beautiful glowing face, in a chemical free color perfect for your skin tone. A full set of handmade, all natural makeup brushes are neatly packaged in a stylish cosmetics bag, along with liquid mineral concealer, which is also perfect for protecting and plumping your lips, two shades of foundation and bronzer, and a complimenting natural eye shadow trio. A pure pigment mineral blush compact comes with the package as well, for a natural sunny glow to your lips and cheeks. You will also get a bottle of Neroli mist setting spray to finish your makeup application, and a free brows kit complete with a small, handy mirror, an assortment of style shapers, and a pure mineral brow pencil. With Naked Minerals, you only need to apply a small amount to see the best results, so each package is truly an excellent value! You know you are doing something good for your face when you apply Naked Minerals. From the silky feeling of your skin to the radiating glow you see in the mirror, you will see a tremendous improvement in your skin?s natural qualities. Better yet, Naked Minerals is covered by a 100% satisfaction guarantee to ensure your safe use and complete satisfaction. So, if you have been considering mineral makeup or if you were unhappy with the other mineral makeups you have tried, give Naked Minerals a try. You and your skin will be glad you did! Minerals are the inorganic substance that occurs naturally in rocks and in the ground and has its own characteristic appearance and chemical composition. The three main functions of minerals are as constituents of the skeleton, as soluble salts which help control the composition of the body fluids, and as essential adjuncts to the action of many enzymes and other proteins. There are many different types of minerals, some more important than others, but today let?s look at magnesium, calcium, potassium, selenium, zinc, and chromium picolinate? So here they are! Magnesium Magnesium is an important mineral that helps the body to maintain muscles, nerves, and bones. It is also used in heart rhythm, energy metabolism and protein synthesis. The major sources of magnesium are spinach, nuts, seeds, whole grains, water, fruits and vegetables. The deficiency of magnesium can cause sensitiveness to noise, nervousness, irritability, mental depression, confusion, twitching, trembling, apprehension, insomnia, muscle weakness and cramps in the toes, feet, legs, or fingers. Calcium Calcium is a major mineral essential for healthy and strong bones and teeth. It is also ensures the proper functioning of muscles and nerves and even helps your blood clot. It is of very much importance for the growing children. The sources of calcium are milk, cheese, eggs, dairy products, fruits, green vegetables, almonds, seaweeds (such as kelp, wakame and hijiki), nuts, beans and pulses, breads and fish. The deficiency of calcium can affect bone and teeth formation, while its excess can lead to kidney stones. Selenium Selenium is an essential mineral that functions largely in the form of proteins, called seleno-proteins, which act as enzymes and help prevent damage to cells in the body by oxidants in the environment or those produced by normal metabolism. The sources of selenium are seafood, some meats (such as kidney and liver), and some grains and seeds. The deficiency of selenium causes ?Keshan? disease, a fatal form of cardio-myopathy (heart muscle disease). While its excess can cause reversible balding and brittle nails, give a garlic odor to the breath, and cause intestinal distress, weakness and slowed mental functioning. Potassium Potassium is a mineral that serves as an electrolyte and is involved in the balance of fluid within the body. It is important in controlling the activity of the heart, muscles, nervous system and just about every cell in the body. It regulates the water balance and acid-base balance in the blood and tissues. Our bodies contain more than twice as much potassium as sodium (typically nine ounces versus four ounces). The major sources of potassium are bananas and orange juice. Some other sources include breads, cereals and other grain products. The deficiency of potassium can cause your muscles not to work properly and you will feel weak. The excess of potassium can cause an irregular heart beat. Zinc Zinc is an essential mineral essential which is involved in the manufacture of protein and in cell division. It is also a constituent of insulin, and is concerned with the sense of smell. The sources of zinc are eggs, cereal grains, meat, liver, seafood and nuts. The deficiency of zinc can cause short stature, anemia, increased pigmentation of skin, enlarged liver and spleen (hepatosplenomegaly), impaired gonadal function, impaired wound healing, and immune deficiency. The excess of zinc can cause gastrointestinal irritation (upset stomach) and cause copper deficiency. Chromium Picolinate Chromium picolinate is an essential mineral which plays a vital role in processing carbohydrates and fats. It also works with insulin (a hormone, produced in the pancreas) in assisting cells to take in glucose and release energy; that makes blood sugar available to the cells as our basic fuel. Chromium picolinate is an essential mineral which plays an absolute vital role in processing carbohydrates and fats. It also works with insulin (a hormone, produced in the pancreas) in assisting cells to take in glucose and release energy; that makes blood sugar available to the cells as our basic fuel. The sources of chromium are meats, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, fats and vegetable oils. The deficiency of chromium can cause anxiety, fatigue, glucose intolerance (particularly in people with diabetes), inadequate metabolism of amino acids, and an increased risk of arteriosclerosis. Vista Point ICELAND

VPG-DVD-213 - ICELAND Iceland is an island born of fire and ice with white glaciers, black beaches and green meadows: a land of geysers, waterfalls and volcanoes. Reykjavik is set amid a fascinating landscape, a metropolis on the outermost edge of civilisation and the world's northernmost capital city. A little outside the city is an attraction that is a meeting place for one and all, The Blue Lagoon, the largest bath tub in the world! The mineral water it contains has a temperature of forty degrees centigrade and the milky-blue pool has been proven to possess beneficial healing qualities. Southeast of The Blue Lagoon is Hveragerdi that is set within an idyllic valley. Due to its protected location and numerous thermal springs, in 1929 a garden city originated there and within its many greenhouses grow vegetables, fruit and exotic flowers. The small coastal picturesque village of Vik with its few houses and around three hundred inhabitants is located in a valley close to a bay. The mystical looking rocks seem to protect this place that has the most rainfall in what is an already rainy region and above which the rain clouds are often alive with both thunder and lightning. Iceland is a fascinating world of water, fire and ice and full of breathtaking beauty and overwhelming contrast. It is one of the last natural paradises on Earth.

Does Nothing Beat Those Old Fossils? Solar and Hydro Take Up the Challenge

What is alternative energy? Alternative energy is just about any source of non mainstream energy supply. In other words, it is power supplied by things other than fossil fuels. In general, non fossil fuel energy is thought to have less of an impact upon the environment than fossil fuels sources, so they are considered to be more sustainable. What do we mean by sustainable? Sustainable is generally defined both in terms of relatively low CO2 emissions as well as the ability to either renew, or to tap into, an almost infinite energy source. These two features are the hallmarks of an alternative energy source. The key sources for alternative energy, excluding nuclear power are: Geothermal energy Wind Power Biomass Solar power Hydro electrical Power A brief precis of each source is included below. Geothermal Energy Geothermal energy is an excellent source of heat and, b y boiling water to make steam, power in those areas where the earth's crust is thinnest making heat more accessible. It is not really viable where you have to drill down a long way to capture the heat from the earth's molten core. Wind Power The wind's energy can be transferred into electricity by the use of wind turbines. These wind turbines are not fundamentally different from the windmills of old. Their large blades catch the wind and are turned, just like any other windmill. The difference is that these blades turn a shaft that uses magnets to generate electricity. Previously, windmills turned a stone wheel to generate flour from wheat! Biomass This is basically the same method of energy generation as with fossil fuels. The only real difference being that the fuel has not been fossilised over millions of years and is from a renewable source (i.e. more can be grown). Just about any form of organic matter can be used as biomass, whether it is animal products, wood products, rubbish or even refined vegetable oils such as oilseed rape or sunflower oil. Many vehicles have been converted to run on bio diesel - which is diesel that has been made from vegetable oils. Solar Power Solar power is probably the energy source that springs to mind when you are asked to name an alternative energy source. It is also the one that is becoming increasingly widespread in its use. You can now buy DIY solar cells and solar panels, that you fit yourself. Solar power, as the name suggests, comes from the sun. The energy is used in one of two ways. Heat energy - A solar panel absorbs the heat from the sun. It transfers this heat to the hot water supply, helping to generate hot water for day to day usage, or heating. Electrical Energy - A photovoltaic cell captures the light energy or photons, to generate electricity. This electricity is usually stored in a battery and the battery is then used to provide electrical power. Hydro Electrical Power In mountainous areas especially, water is a key generator of alternative energy. This is known as hydroelectric power and is commonly generated from dams, and steep water falls. Rather like a windmill but using water instead of wind, hydroelectric power is generated by falling water pushing past turbine blades. This causes the blades to spin, which causes the turbine to generate electricity. Perhaps the key difference between wind and water is that wind speed can be variable. Water flow, on the other hand, tends to be relatively constant. This gives hydroelectric power an enormous advantage, as it can be relied upon as a constant source of electrical energy. Similar techniques are used in the sea, using tidal flows to do much the same task. This is better known as tidal energy, but is fundamentally the same process. In Summary There are numerous other sources of alternative energy, including nuclear power generation, but the above 5 are the key types that are becoming increasingly widespread. In fact, over the course of the next decade, it is likely that these sources will stop being alternative and start becoming mainstream! Amber - Beautiful Fossils

Amber is seen by most people as a gemstone, but it is actually fossil resin aged between thirty and ninety million years old. Amber is available in four varieties: Blue amber, Dominican amber, Baltic amber and Delatynite. The most valuable of these is the Blue amber. Amber is commonly used in bead making, jewelery and in ornaments. Amber is also sometimes used in cigar-holders and for the mouth pieces of pipes. The Turks see this usage as valuable so as to avoid the passing of germs when sharing pipes. Amber has been used in ornaments since the Neolithic times and it was used either as an amulet or for medicinal purposes. Amber can be copied quite easily by using a similar plastic resin. True Baltic amber contains succinic acid and it is a fossil resin. Geology-wise amber is mined in Sambia, within Russia, in the marine glauconitic sand or blue earth. Some pieces of the gem contain preserved insects and occasionally small tree frogs. Amber can also retain parts of plants, insects, spiders, wood, stalacites, and hair. Amber is generally found within Sambia, and occasionally along the Baltic Sea and North Sea. The gems are collected along the sea shore where they have been washed up from the sea floor, sometimes divers are used to fish Amber from deeper areas. Amber has been used architecturally wise in the creation of the Amber Room in Russia. The Amber Room was a collection of amber panels backed with gold leaves and mirrors that were created for the King of Prussia in 1701 and then handed on to the Tsar Peter the Great. When the Nazis came in 1941 to destroy the building, the panels were hidden and have not been found since. This room has since been recreated in 2003 and is dazzling to see.
